Calm Brain Powerful Mind: Abolish Stress to Unleash Your True Potential by Aziz Velji is a non-fiction self-help guide with the aim of burrowing down to the root causes of stress to eliminate them as opposed to simply learning how to cope with them. This concept is what sets Velji's work apart from other guides that may appear to be on the same wavelength at first glance but, on further reading, most certainly are not. Velji breaks the book down into six interconnected parts, initiating his method with the human condition as it applies to both psychology and anatomy, embarking on the hamster wheel of day-to-day living in Our Personal World and Realities of Stress. He then moves on to Working on the Brain, The Science and the Art of Transformation, its process, and the culmination of what we have set out to achieve with transformation itself.
My father used to call the forms of holistic self-care that my East Asian mother employed on a day to day basis as 'hocus pocus'. In truth, I have found the practices—and there are many—to be something of a sanity soother in my own hectic life. Aziz Velji elevates these practices within the pages of Calm Brain Powerful Mind by harnessing the actual science and providing the tools to cast the stress out completely. While some of the information was not new to me, others were truly eye-opening. An example of this is the sectional areas of the brain, our sub-brains, self-aware, intellectual, emotional, and instinctive, which are then fleshed out in detail. The left and right side of the brain are addressed also, but the inclusion of the four-in-one was something of a game-changer for me. Along with Velji's practical application of the data-backed foundations, I believe many will find a true transformation possible with his guidance.
