Call of the Columbia: River of Redemption is a work of fiction in the historical fiction, adventure, and slice of life sub-genres, and was penned by author Brian D. Ratty. In this sweeping tale set in the late nineteenth century, we find ourselves immersed in the day to day goings-on of the aspirational dreamers who head out west to discover their fortunes across the vast plains of America. We meet a series of fascinating characters from different walks of life, all of whom have secrets and a past they’re trying to leave behind. What results is a fascinating exploration of hardship and struggle for the ultimate reward: freedom.
Author Brian D. Ratty has crafted a fantastic tale that will certainly give historical fiction fans and those who love pioneering tales everything they could want in a novel. One of the things which impressed me most about this work was the commitment to detail of the historical period, particularly in the variance of styles and attitudes between different locations. There’s a little touch of western, but also of city living and the new innovations and ways of living that came during the Gilded Age. The dialogue was also an impressive feature, serving to characterize the many different figures but also giving an accurate flavor of the parlance and attitudes of the historical time. Overall, I would highly recommend Call of the Columbia: River of Redemption to fans of inspirational and heart-warming fiction which also has plenty of realism and grit.
