Michelle Young brings us heart-wrenching suspense in Cages. After Gemma has a nasty fall down the stairs at home and Amber is suspended from school, Niall decides his family could use a little vacation. Everyone, including Beatrice, is willing to go and feels that the week away at Lake Clear could be what they all need to relax, recharge, and clear their heads. Upon arriving at their destination, the weather is bad, and the outside of the building looks less than desirable. Perhaps this trip wasn’t the best idea. What follows is the ideal cataclysm that could expose them to the world. Can the Richardson family survive the truth of each other?
Author Michelle Young has set the stage perfectly for these characters. Written in the first-person perspective for each of the four characters, this made sure that I was privy to the innermost thoughts of all. These thoughts and feelings were raw and to the core. These emotions were the ones that most of us keep deeply hidden and caged. The characters are well-described and perfectly relatable. the character development is also very evident in this novel. I loved the analogies used to emphasize the pretense most of us give the outside world and how they fit perfectly with the chosen scenery. I would gladly recommend Cages to young adults and more mature readers. Some very important suggestions regarding being true to ourselves are especially relevant today.
