Busting Walls: Secret Adventures of Foxfire by John Hope is a terrific book for both young and older readers. This sounds like a generic statement but the story of Sebastien and his friends is filled with action, heartwarming moments, and a bonus adventure built by Sebastien himself. As he tries to sort out his life after his mother left him with his step-father, his imagination creates a comic hero named Foxfire. Small, the main character isn’t into sports or anything, it seems, that his step-father thinks young boys should enjoy, like football. This, coupled with a new neighbour who was a bully he couldn’t escape, means trouble seems to fill his life with more problems than he can handle.
John Hope’s writing in Busting Walls is sharp and witty, especially in the Foxfire story. It’s in this side story that Sebastien seems to pour everything he wished his mother was. She is smart, confident, and adventurous and gets the job done with flair and a clever remark. Nothing seems to get her down. Yet, she always takes the time to chat with Sebastien. Though this is all in his imagination, he almost becomes his own parent, trying to find comfort and happiness anywhere he can. There is never a moment where the writing or the characters become preachy. They all work through their problems in their own way, and the growth comes naturally through realistic situations, proving that families are all different and nobody’s life is perfect. The author, John Hope, has created a bunch of characters that readers will enjoy for a long time.
