Bury Him (A Memoir of the Viet Nam War) by Captain Doug Chamberlain is a non-fiction audiobook narrated by David Gilmore that would appeal most to a mixed audience of mature young adults and adults with an interest in the Viet Nam War. The audiobook presents a first-person view from a Marine infantry soldier. Captain Doug Chamberlain faced many challenges during his time in Viet Nam, but no challenge was greater than the dilemma he was faced with when he was ordered to violate the Warrior's Honor Code by burying the remains of a Marine.
Bury Him by Captain Doug Chamberlain is a well-written and well-narrated audiobook that served to give me a first-person perspective on the intricacies of the Viet Nam War rather than the broad strokes provided by history textbooks. Hearing about what Capt. Chamberlain had to go through, not just as a soldier at war, but as a man put in the middle of a political-military cover-up led to me feeling great sympathy for the captain. I have read historical articles and books about the war, but this is the first one that made me feel such strong emotions. Overall, I am very glad that I listened to this audiobook as it has taught me about what the war was truly like for those fighting it and that not everything was as legally above board as the history books portray.
The narrator of this audiobook was David Gilmore. Mr. Gilmore is an accomplished performer who has many voice acting credits to his name. Some of his notable narrations of audiobooks include Medusa's Curse, The Quiet Professional: Major Richard J. Meadows of the U.S. Army Special Forces, and Top Cases of The FBI (American Criminal History). His acting expertise was clearly heard in this audiobook in how he pitched his voice just right for each character and scene. His narration really allowed me to close my eyes and picture each part of the audiobook as it was spoken.
