“Burnt Mountain” is the story of Thayer Wentworth, who was adored by her father and grandmother, but who never quite lived up to her mother’s expectations. She spent her summers at Camp Sherwood Forest where she felt at home. It was there on Burnt Mountain where she met and fell in love with Nick. Returning home after camp Thayer was betrayed by her mother and grandmother in a way no young woman should ever be betrayed. College brought a romance with Angus O’Neal, an Irishman fascinated by Irish folklore. College Professor Angus began writing a book of the old Irish tales. Soon Angus was mesmerized by the camp and he changed. Thayer no longer knew who her husband was; he was obsessed with the old tales. What was going on at Burnt Mountain? Had Angus gone insane? Would Thayer turn to Nick for refuge? Or does the magic exist?

“Burnt Mountain” is an unusual story. Despite the negative reviews of others I enjoyed the book. Yes, there were a few holes in it but overall it was an entertaining audio book. I would have liked to see Thayer confronting her mother. The woman obviously cared more about people’s opinions than her daughter. I liked Thayer’s grandmother but could not understand why she did not attempt to stop Thayer’s mother. Then there was Angus. I believe he saw a young woman easy to manipulate. He was so caught up in the legends that he could no longer see reality. The plot is part love story, part supernatural, and part horror and yet it is southern all the way through it. The naysayers can have their own opinion and I’ll have mine. “Burnt Mountain” is an intriguing book; it leaves the reader pondering. Isn’t that the definition of a good book? “Burnt Mountain” does not have an ending all wrapped up in a pretty package with a bow. Instead the reader is left to their own imagination to decide what was really happening on “Burnt Mountain”.
