In Burdened, the first book in a New Adult series by Peiri Ann, eighteen-year-old Tracey is just an ordinary girl living an ordinary life, until she quite literally bumps into the man of her dreams. But Nathan isn't all that he appears to be and though there is quite an attraction between them, he constantly pulls away, worried that their love will end in tragedy because he is a Sephlem and a descendant of demons. It's up to Tracey to show him how much she loves and trusts him and how he needs to trust himself as well if they are going to work together and survive against people who seem to be doing everything in their power to tear them apart.
Burdened by Peiri Ann was an interesting novel and another entry in the burgeoning world of New Adult, a genre that hopes to create a space between YA and adult. Since Tracey is still in high school, Burdened does have a YA vibe, though I suppose several intimate moments push it towards the realm of Upper YA and thus New Adult. Despite the ambiguity of the genre placement itself, Burdened was an enjoyable read, the character interactions were entertaining, and the antics of a certain interrupting cousin were amusing. The romance between Tracey and Nathan was all consuming, so much so that they felt pained if the other was nearby, great for readers looking for a passion that leaves them breathless. All in all, I found myself, along with Tracey, being drawn into the fascinating world Ann has built.
