Bulls Island by Dorothea Benton Frank Is the story of two people deeply in love but separated by a tragic event in their past. Twenty years ago Betts McGee left Charleston and took a secret with her; she never intended to return. That all changed when the investment bank she worked for asked her to head a project on Bulls Island. The thought of returning to Charleston brought butterflies to her stomach and a twitch to her eye. She would be working directly with J.D. Langley the only man she ever loved. There had long been hard feelings between the McGee’s and the Langley’s. The Langley family was old southern money; while the McGees were wealthy merchants. J.D.’s mother felt merchants were a lower class, even wealthy merchants. A tragic accident ended the engagement. The reunion between J.D. and Betts is one of stirred emotions, anger, desire, love, hatred, and fears of rejection.
I love Dorothy Frank’s books. Bull’s Island is by far my favorite. Frank is a master at southern romance. I could picture the mansions of Charleston with their southern charm. Until you’ve lived in the south you can’t fully understand the culture. My southern accent always comes out a bit when I read good southern romance.
Frank offers readers a delightful and intriguing romance. Skillfully Frank allows the sensual tension grow between Betz. and J.D. The readers think they the inevitable will happen but will it and if it does when. Frank also throws in the unknown factor of the Italian gangster. Is he having Betz followed? If it is not him then who is? Other characters that stand out are: J.D.'s mother and wife. Both are determined to hold on tight to J.D. Frank is a Frank offers reads a delightful and intriguing romance. Skillfully Frank allows the sensual tension grow between Betz. and J.D.
