Wouldn’t it be fun to go to Hawaii? To explore the islands and experience Hawaiian adventures? To study the sea life and learn to surf? Buffy and Sissy, two sibling kittens, are going on a vacation to Hawaii with their mother. They’ll visit three of the eight islands, learn how to surf, scuba dive, hula, and study the sea life, the volcano and so much more. They’ll also enjoy some of the local cuisine, especially Buffy’s favorite, shave ice.
Colleen Chapman’s picture book story, Buffy & Sissy Go to Hawaii, is the second book in The Traveling Kittens series. Colorfully illustrated, this book is a delight for young readers. It’s not only entertaining but educational, as there is lots for young readers to learn about Hawaii – including some Hawaiian words. There is a brief list of words at the end of the book, words that Buffy and Sissy learned on their trip to Hawaii. The plot develops nicely, following the mother and two kittens as they venture to Hawaii and learn about the islands they visit. There are interesting tidbits of information to interest young readers, like the park ranger telling the kittens that astronauts trained on top of the Kilauea volcano at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The author concludes with an interesting sidebar telling the young reader that the kittens are based on real cats in the author’s family, giving the story a personal touch. The story is beautifully told as well as being educational, a gem of a book that will be treasured and enjoyed.
