Along with a respectable career, Camille has always dreamed of a doting husband and a happy family. On the other hand, Aiden Peterson has been too busy managing his six younger brothers to even think of a girl. Yet, there are days when he sorely misses having someone to take care of him and his family. When a broken laptop brings Camille and Aiden together, there is a sudden whirlwind of a courtship, culminating in a hasty marriage. However, minding six man-children in various stages of maturity is not what Camille signed up for, especially with her newly-married husband away on business trips. To know how she fares, you have to read Brides and Brothers, a present-day retelling of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers by Anneka R. Walker.
In this thoroughly engaging novel, Anneka R. Walker combined laugh-out-loud moments with occasional snippets of wisdom. Camille’s plan to marry off her brothers-in-law, while quite brilliant, initially seemed somewhat selfish to me. Yet, her heart was in the right place when she played matchmaker, engaging each of her friends with a Peterson brother. Despite her meticulous plans and careful execution, her picture of a happy family kept stumbling, especially when her matches did not go as intended. Hilarious situations arose when the girls concocted petty acts of revenge, or the boys planned surprise adventures. While engaged in numerous shenanigans, all the characters finally learned to become more mature, with their love for family rekindled. Despite its light-hearted tone, Brides and Brothers thus presented an insightful read as well.
