Brazen Summer by Jordan Elizabeth is the second Hayview Manor book. It’s summer again and Annie Carmichael is about to graduate at eighteen years old. She’s hoping that this summer will be better than the last and that she’ll at least have a summer fling. When Caleb arrives back in Cloverville with his mother after being away for many years, Annie is optimistic things will work out exactly as she wants. Then she stumbles on a piece of evidence about a girl that went missing 15 years ago. With a fresh set of eyes, Annie can’t help but try to solve this mystery and give some closure to the family. But what if Dana Grenier just did decide to leave town and never return?
As with the first book, Brazen Summer is written in the first person. Once again, we have the privilege of knowing the protagonist’s inner thoughts and feelings. Jordan Elizabeth surely knows how to pull the reader into her mystery novellas with writing that awakens the senses with her vivid descriptions. Because I had the pleasure of reading the first book, I could see that the characters have matured in the interim. The new characters introduced in this story are also relatable. Even though this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone. I gladly recommend this book for young adult mystery lovers as well as more mature readers. I hope to see more Hayview Manor books filled with new mysteries in the future.
