In Brayden the Brave Goes to the Hospital by Diane Kane, we are introduced to a fearless little boy who gets sick one day and has to go to the hospital. Brayden was scared, but he had his family and friends come to visit him, so it made him feel a bit better. When the doctor tells his parents that he needed surgery once again, Brayden is afraid. He knew, though, that he wouldn’t be alone, so it made him feel better. When his family wasn’t there, he had nice nurses who let him know that he wasn’t alone. Every time Brayden felt scared, all he had to do was look around him and know that he wasn’t alone. Finally, when he was back home and in his bed at night, he wasn’t scared because he had a bunch of friends and family who were all around him. They helped Brayden be the brave boy that he was.
I thought Brayden the Brave Goes to the Hospital was an adorable and unique read. Brayden's character was nicely written and can relate to the book's intended audience. Like Brayden, most children are afraid of places like a doctor's office or hospital. The message that the book sends is positive and uplifting. Knowing that whatever happens that you are never alone is a belief that would benefit many children. The illustrations are also beautifully done and fit perfectly with the storyline. Overall, I think that Diane Kane has done a wonderful job, and I look forward to reading more of her work.
