The year is 2023 and America is increasingly concerned with issues of citizen safety as ISIS continues to stake claim on our friendly country. Military troops grow in number to offset the ill effects that Arab countries inflict upon innocents throughout the world. In an effort to grow country defense, U.S. President Carlisle reinstates the draft; this time to include the female population. As Greer Connally hears the citizen chants of “It’s 2023. The war is not for me,” frequenting the nightly television news, her resolve to be part of the solution is solidified. She’s not afraid to join the ranks of patriots ready to defend the country. Greer signs up to become a rare female SEAL, along with the rare women who share her resolve.

In this very contemporary story of war, Chelsi Arnold creates a sisterhood only possible in the highly competitive world of survival. When Greer is assigned to be “swim buddies” with the one girl she is constantly at odds with, she learns the true meaning of loyalty. Without constantly being responsible for another person, our humanity will fail. Arnold uses the words of Abraham Lincoln to encompass the theme of her novel, Brave: “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” The female point of view of this futuristic, yet relevant war story is refreshing while extremely likely. With a hint of more story installments to come, I believe that Brave: The Sisterhood Series will find its way onto a best seller list.
