Brainwashed: A True Story of Psychological Domestic Abuse and the PTSD Aftermath is about the long-term effects of psychological and emotional abuse. Kashonia Carnegie, Ph.D., illustrates the traumatic impact of psychological abuse from her own life experiences, which she uses as an in-depth case study from her early childhood on a farm in Australia to her adult years in an abusive marriage. Carnegie introduces psychological and theoretical explanations to enlighten us about psychological abuse, explaining that people are more accepting of physical and sexual abuse but that many people today are unaware that psychological abuse is just as dangerous.
In Brainwashed, Kashonia Carnegie's style of memoir and scientific approach is very effective as she breaks down five significant neuroscientific facts of psychological abuse. Her manner is simple and straightforward so the average person, who may not know much about psychology, can grasp and understand the concepts quickly. Some of her conclusions may be controversial, but she supports them well. Carnegie raises awareness and offers education about emotional abuse and its potential long-term effects, such as PTSD on mental health, which is prevalent in all societies today. In addition, you come to recognize and better understand why survivors and victims stay in abusive relationships, developing more compassion and empathy for the survivors. I highly recommend this book for survivors and victims as a self-help wake-up call to start recognizing the repeated patterns so they can seek help and for anyone that wants to understand emotional abuse.
