Bracan’s Daughter by Michael Calabrese is a fascinating blend of crime fiction, paranormal mystery, and breathtaking adventure. On June 19th, 2023, the eve of the Summer Solstice, the guards of Stonehenge see a flash of blue light charring the grass and the stones. Suspecting vandalism, they call the police. D.S. Bracan, Inspector Ellis, and forensic investigator Harry Wilson arrive at the scene. But, unknown to them, D.S. Bracan’s daughter Janyce picks up a large egg-size red opaque stone in a hawk’s claw of metal at Stonehenge and feels as if she is struck by lightning. Utterly surprised by the rain leaving no trace of the charring, the police officers are at a loss. Is it ball lightning? A meteor? A UFO? Mysterious energy? Or simply magic?
Bracan’s Daughter by Michael Calabrese is an intriguing mystery. I particularly liked the enchanting combination of my favorite genres, crime mystery, paranormal fantasy, and action-packed adventure. I could not think of a better scene for the story than the legendary Stonehenge, and quaint Glastonbury and Tor, where the events unfold. In addition, the finely detailed sceneries of Wiltshire make it breathtakingly atmospheric. Calabrese craftily interconnects several plot threads over centuries, and these seemingly unrelated storylines create a gripping, suspenseful puzzle. It is narrated in a reader-friendly style and offers scenic atmospheric descriptions alternating with humor-laced dialogues. I highly recommend it to paranormal, fantasy, crime fiction, and adventure fans.
