In Borrowed Wings by Regina Puckett, a baby dragon faces insecurities just like any other baby. His head is too big, his wings are too small, and he can't fly like the other little dragons. His momma notices his distress and then lets him borrow her wings for the day. What fun! Neither of them forgot that special day, even when baby dragon grew big, and his mother grew grey.
While the text didn't rhyme, it was still enjoyable and age appropriate for a young child...perhaps in the 2-5 age range. Puckett employs several different tricks in writing for children, including repetition, and parent-child relations which will help kids learn. It was a sweet book with a cute moral and is sure to make kids feel appreciated and loved by their parents. My only complaint is that it was too short. I would have loved to see even more dragons and it would be cool to see if Puckett will make this into a series or not.
In my book, it's never too early to get kids interested in fantasy and science fiction. Dragons are the best bridge, because it mixes magic with something that kids are already prone to be fond of: dinosaurs. Regina Puckett embraces this and, as both author and illustrator, does a fantastic job creating a cute and fun world for kids to find. The drawings looked like actual paint, which was cool, and clearly depicted a kid-style version of dragon land. I could see myself trying to draw these when I was a kid and having a total blast.
