Book of Poems by Phyllis Sunday is a special collection of poetry which blends spiritual love with a fresh attitude to answering the demands of modern times. I love the way that Sunday speaks honestly on various subjects without compromising on style and rhythm. The overall effect is contemporary poetry with a spiritual and aesthetic base. I found her verses easy to read, and therefore think that this book is suitable for children and young adults as well.
The poem “Happiness” expressed very well what happiness means to a spiritual person. The poem “Time” is beautiful, languid and rhythmic, while “No Peace” is an excellent poem in the genre of social commentary, voicing dissatisfaction regarding a range of social problems, a theme which occurs in several poems. I also liked the poem “Mr Personality,” which appears to be inspired by someone the author admires.
Sunday writes with an observant eye, but also shows her detached side and her determination to find peace in a troubled world in the poem “No Stress.” The final poem is a bold statement on the integrity of teaching and the need to preserve good education, despite unpredictable issues that come up in schools. In this book, I truly admired Sunday's simplicity, honesty, finesse, observations and spirit. I think that encouraging people to share their own experiences is a secondary benefit of the book, and being a teacher and writer herself, Sunday can inspire the younger generation to take up creative writing with an honest and spiritual touch, without sacrificing modern style and power in verse.
