Bone Machine by CN James and Amy Joy is a science fiction story that will appeal most to an audience of young adults and adults who enjoy science fiction, psychological thrillers, big reveals, horror filled moments, and of course ... robots. Bone Machine is set in a period when humans live in an almost utopia with lots of time for relaxation because their lives are not dominated by work. Poverty, war, and hunger have been all but eliminated, thanks to Artificially Conscious Androlibra. The story follows main character Grayson Cornel as he replaces Zoe Asher in The Libra Robotics and Cybernetics Corp. Grayson Cornel’s very first assignment leads to a bunch of lost robots, dead bodies, and a lot of questions. In uncovering what went wrong during his assignment, Grayson Cornel’s life and beliefs are changed forever.
Bone Machine by CN James and Amy Joy reminded me of iRobot with how the robots take care of many everyday jobs and act as personal assistants. The plot is unique from iRobot though; just the general feel of the settings and environment is similar. Bone Machine has well developed characters, scenes, and dialogue that keep the plot moving at a steady pace throughout the book. There were a few spots that I found horrifying and gross, but they were important to the storyline and not just added for the horror factor. I also really enjoyed the psychological feel of Bone Machine, as well as the moral dilemmas faced by the characters.
