Bone Dry: A Soul Shamans Novel (Volume 1) by Cady Vance is a young adult paranormal that brings two worlds together. Holly is sixteen and her mother is what is known as a shaman. But she's taking her spiritual powers too intensely and isn't focused any longer on the real world. So Holly has to step up and take care of her family. She sets up fake hauntings and then uses her shaman powers to rid her wealthy classmates of these fake ghosts. But what Holly doesn't realize is that ghosts are real and other shamans and spirits are moving into town. As her mom slips further into this mystical world, Holly has to learn to fight to save her mom's mind, and the rest of her town, before they all get sucked permanently into the Lower World.
This is a cool concept. I love stories that start off contemporary and then bring the paranormal into an otherwise normal world. You could almost say this book is a magical realism story because of that, so it will appeal to readers of magical realism and even contemporary stories since it has some of those elements as well. I liked that Holly was thrust into this new world almost unknowingly and had to fend for herself. She was a strong, plucky character that I think readers will relate to and want to root for. She was smart when it came to making money and even smarter when it came to fighting the evil in the world. Nice job!
