"Bloodline" by Mark Billingham – Audio Book
Fans of Detective Tom Thorne have watched as he developed over the years. Each book penned by Mark Billingham has shown a different aspect of Thorne. For this reason Throne is easy to relate too. I am not the person today that I was a year ago. Each experience of life changes us at least a little. "Bloodline" opens with Thorne at the hospital bedside of Detective Louise Porter, his love interest. Porter suffered a miscarriage. While Thorne knew he needed to be by her side, it was almost a relief to be called away. Fifteen years ago serial killer Raymond Garvey was caught, convicted and imprisoned. He served life in prison. Twelve years after his conviction he died of a brain tumor.
Thorne investigates the murder of a woman suffocated with a plastic bag in her own home. All appearances point to domestic violence. Thorne knew a serial killer was on the loose when he received reports on several other recent murders. The murders had a unique link: their mothers were victims of Garvey. Each victim was found with a sliver of Garvey’s x-ray.
For those not familiar with Mark Billingham’s Tom Thorne, the setting is London. Billingham is a talented writer. He specializes in books concerning serial killer, which is almost a genre in itself. I was quickly drawn into the plot of Bloodline. The author knows how to let the tension slowly build culminating in a crescendo. It is fascinating to watch Thorne’s process for solving a crime. He allows himself to enter into the killer's mind, never going so deep as to be stuck but just deep enough to solve the crime. I am not sure about the name of the reader but the voice suits well with the plot.
