Bloodlender is a young adult urban fantasy novel by Zoe Perrenoud. Sixteen-year-old Sophie Constantin's life has never been the same after the shocking murder of her father six years ago. But when she discovers that she possesses ancient blood magic in her veins, Sophie accidentally burns her house down and sends her mother into a coma. After being sent to live with the Delvilles, Sophie meets Gauthier Delville, a teenager suffering from a seemingly mysterious terminal illness. Now, she struggles with her feelings for Gauthier and the role the Delville family may have played in her father's murder. Meanwhile, a man named Jonathan Valvert teaches Sophie to control her Bloodlender powers. With Gauthier on the brink of death, Sophie must soon find a cure or risk losing him. But with everyone trying to use her, who can Sophie truly trust?
Infused with suspense, romance, and a unique magic system bound to entice fantasy readers, Bloodlender is a wild rollercoaster of a ride you don't want to miss out on. Author Zoe Perrenoud weaves an immersive yarn filled with twists, turns, and unexpected reveals that pull the rug out from under your feet and keep you on the edge of your seat for the duration of the story. The plotting is well-paced, intricate, and thoroughly riveting to read. I found the characters well-developed, with distinct personalities and fleshed-out backstories that add another layer of depth to their personas. I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic between Sophie and Gauthier, as well as Sophie's friendship with Mariam. Recommend to young adult fantasy lovers.
