Bloodgood Messiah by Michael Herman and Jacqueline Santangelo is a gripping story with powerful religious undertones and a setting -the first century political landscape in Jerusalem - that will delight fans of historical fiction. In the first book in the Bloodgood Saga, Moon is hired to track down a woman kidnapped by the time-traveling and mysterious Reader of the Ark of the Covenant. The journey, filled with danger and mystery, will take him to first century Jerusalem. Follow the narrative as a woman seeks to fulfill an ancient prophecy and discover how she risks her mission to save the life of a man condemned to be scourged and crucified. But will they fulfill their missions in a time fraught by the workings of fate?
This novel has a strong religious feel with biblical and historical references that plunge readers into the first century Jewish and Roman cultures. Readers are introduced to Pontius Pilate’s court and also get a feel of the fever ignited around the idea of the Christian Messiah. The lyrical nature of the prose makes for an enjoyable read and it greets the reader from the start. The writing is crisp and filled with religious symbolism, with images of the desert and cultural aspects that evoke spiritual and religious themes. The authors blend time travel with historical elements to create a thriller that keeps readers turning pages. While the plot is filled with unexpected surprises, I was gripped by the skillful handling of both the religious and the political themes that punctuate the narrative. Bloodgood Messiah is engaging in a hypnotic sort of way and filled with the kind of entertainment readers enjoy. A huge achievement, indeed!
