Blood Numbers by C F Kreitzer is a compelling YA sci-fi novel that will have you zipping through the pages. In this world, teenager Aston Vazeto has a different mindset from those around her. Her blood isn't for sale. She's sixteen and defiant. In this universe, there are Donors and Recipients, and she'll be the first Donor in the history of the New World to never have donated--that is, until her father's accident at a power plant, which plunges the family into poverty. She decides to go to the yearly blood auction. At these auctions, Recipients bid for the best blood. Aston's high-caliber blood is in demand and can fetch a high price. Her peers try altering their donations but are put under arrest and tortured. Wanting to avoid placing her family in danger, and trying to hang on to their income, Aston dares to defy the facility and their drugs, which are designed to keep Donors in line. Once on her own, she is forced to make choices she'd never thought about before. Nice Marcus or upstart Gannet? Rebel or follow the status quo?
Kreitzer is a YA reader's dream. She dives right into the angst, bringing you a plot that grabs you and doesn't let you go. Aston is a strong personality, with well-defined attributes. You really get inside her mind and heart, thanks to the first-person POV, which the author does well. You have subplots to ponder, and worldbuilding that is fresh and vibrant. It's easy to place yourself in the characters' shoes, and I like that this author doesn't try to overplay the drama--it's there, in the story, the characters, the dialogue, pacing, etc. The premise is intriguing, the emotions realistic, and it all melds into one immersive, entertaining read. Being a sci-fi writer myself, I'm always looking for something different, and this is it. If you have a zest for new YA, Blood Numbers by C F Kreitzer is a must-read.
