Blood and Dust by J.C. Paulson is an adventure set in the early days of civilization in Canada. It tells the adventures of James Sinclair, a young man who leaves his family home to pursue his dream of becoming a goldsmith. He ends up in the boarding house belonging to Hannah and this is where his adventures begin. When James is accused of a crime he didn’t commit, Hannah helps him escape from Toronto. This sets him on a journey across Canada to a town called Moose Jaw. On his journey, he makes lifelong friends with hobos, traders, and farmers. Friends who later on put their own lives on the line for him. He also encounters a few females, each with their own story and impact on James’s future relationships. When James reaches Moose Jaw, he realizes he will never be able to outrun his prosecutor and decides to stand up and face him.
Blood and Dust by J.C. Paulson is not for the faint of heart and is in keeping with the title of the book. Blood and Dust starts with James already in Moose Jaw and then it takes you back to where everything started in Toronto. The character development is amazing. You can easily see the difference between James at the beginning of the book and the end. He also grows in the romantic relationships he has throughout the plot. I could see that the last relationship James has was going to endure. J.C. Paulsen was able to write James's maturity in this relationship extremely well. The theme of friendship is an important one in the book. Everything that happens to James has him making new friends and the way all his friends come together at the end to help him just shows the importance thereof. I really enjoyed all the adventures in Blood and Dust, even the gory parts.
