Blackout: Rae Hatting Mysteries, Book 3 is a novel of suspense written by Heather Osborne. FBI Supervisor Peter Accardi has assigned Rae and Luke to work an undercover job that entails them joining a theater company in New York City. Someone is stalking and killing theatrical personnel and replacing staged murders with the real thing in New York’s theatre district. First, Romeo ended up drinking real poison, and a young actress’s staged suicide by hanging became horrifyingly real. Rae and Luke have joined the Black and White Theatre, she as an assistant to the Stage Manager and he’s in set design. While their undercover story is that they’re just friends, their co-workers are instantly keyed in to the intense connection Rae and Luke seem to be having trouble resisting. Luke has been waiting for Rae to come around and let him love her, but Rae sees too many dangers in allowing such a relationship to grow -- however, being simply partners is getting more and more challenging for the two of them.
Heather Osborne's novel of suspense, Blackout: Rae Hatting Mysteries, Book 3, finds the two FBI agents insinuating themselves into the secretive and close-knit world of the theater and watching how they do it is grand fun. Rae and Luke are consummate professionals, and anyone who's read the two previous books in the Rae Hatting Mysteries will enjoy seeing how they adapt their skills for this theatrical investigation as much as I did. Osborne keeps the romantic tension felt by her two protagonists at a fine pitch; it adds intensity to just about everything they do, but their story encompasses so much more than merely thwarted passion. Blackout's plot is finely drawn, and I found myself overwhelmed with clues and red herrings, making it impossible to hazard a guess at the identity of the killer. While Blackout is the last book in the Rae Hatting Mystery Series, Osborne has promised a new novel, Mimic, which is based on Hatting's adopted daughter, Grace. I'm looking forward to reading it. Blackout: Rae Hatting Mysteries, Book 3 is a marvelous final installment in this series, and it’s most highly recommended.
