Often the person we see at work is not the person we see at home. In Birth of a Salesman we meet Vincent. He is prone to panic attacks, loves his daughter and rarely sees a doctor. Vincent is also a salesman. Like most salesmen, he knows how to sell himself and how to be what the company needs; and he’s good at it. His appraisals prove he knows what he’s doing. Often he thinks outside of the box and never lets anyone stand in his way.

Birth of A Salesman is touted as a book within a book. That is an excellent description. As the reader meets and follows Vincent’s life, he also learns more than a bit about salesmanship. Among the topics discussed are self-confidence, be informed, form a relationship with the customer, stay challenged, and time management.

The information in this book can be used by all adults not just those in the sales force. I say that, because any time you are searching for a job, you are selling yourself. We all need to show self-confidence even when we are quaking in our socks. Regardless of our occupation, time management or efficiency is paramount.

Birth of A Salesman is well written. The format is interesting and easy to understand. This is not your typical how-to-book. The author has found a unique and successful way of presenting the information and holding the reader’s attention. I recommend this book for all adults and high school students. This should be required reading.
