Binge and Sprint: From Endless Cake to Recovery is a self-help guidebook/memoir relating the experiences of Naomi Joseph's struggles with an eating disorder for over four decades. Naomi's battle with food and fluctuations in weight started at the tender age of eight, and it continued to have consequences on her health and psyche for a significant period of her life. This book perfectly demonstrates how stress eating often induces shame, guilt, and embarrassment in people. This type of negative body image and self-hatred further enhances emotional stress, depression, and anxiety. It leads to people chasing an idealized version of themselves, which is unattainable. Naomi named her perfect self Summer in her head. She also relates the devastating impact of one's negative inner self, which she terms the Dark Voice.
Touching and heartbreaking, Binge and Sprint: From Endless Cake to Recovery showcases the ways eating disorders gnaw at one's self-esteem. Author Naomi Joseph cautions against feeding your inner critic as it can sometimes give rise to a negative self within (Dark Voice) that only rekindles your insecurities and stops you from becoming the ideal version of yourself. The author uses anecdotes from her own life to demonstrate the times when food became her last resort to feel good about herself. The timing of the book couldn't be more appropriate as the pandemic has only led to an increase in food intake amongst the general populace due to most people being unable to carry on their lives as usual. I highly recommend it.
