Have you ever had a dream that was so real you could almost taste it? Billy had a delicious dream. It involved a huge basket full of carrots. You see, Billy is a bunny and Billy loves carrots. When he woke up from his sleep, he remembered his dream and his stomach grumbled. He desperately wanted to find that wonderful basket of carrots. He set off on a journey, meeting some friends along the way, friends he had helped in the past. Billy was a very helpful bunny. His friends were always happy to see him, but they were also very busy and couldn’t help Billy look for the basket of carrots that appeared in his dream. What is a bunny to do when his dream doesn’t come true? Trudge home, of course.
Kitty Boyes’ picture book story, Billy Hop’s Dream, is a delightful story that teaches young readers valuable lessons. Not only are young readers introduced to different creatures in nature, they are also taught the importance of being kind and helpful to others, no matter the differences. And that’s the way the forest creatures see Billy: “He was always so helpful…” As Billy ventures on his quest to find the much desired basket of carrots from his dream, he is greeted with love and affection from all he meets. But no carrots. The story is written in simple language to appeal to the young reader and it is accompanied by colorful illustrations. Each animal and insect is described with enough detail to educate the young reader, and each interaction teaches the importance of caring for one another. A great story about caring for others.
