While scrolling through Pinterest, you can find quite a few posts about narcissists, how to spot them, and how to handle them. Not once did I find an explanation for why they do what they do. This book sheds some light on that. In Rebecca Dolton’s Beyond Persuasion, we learn the difference between manipulation and persuasion and why there is a difference. She explains how brainwashing and mind control works and what a huge part body language plays in our daily lives. We all use and are subjected to forms of manipulation every single day. Whether it is for business purposes or in our own personal relationships, this book gives us the tools we need to use when someone is manipulating us, accompanied by examples of what to do to remove ourselves from the situation.
I can state with absolute certainty that I am suddenly more conscious of what people say and how they say it. Becoming aware of the difference between manipulation and persuasion has helped me personally after the death of my mother. I feel richer for having this knowledge. This book is put forward in a very understandable way. The foundations are solidly laid out before the other areas are discussed. References to other books are given where the information was gathered for possible further study. I certainly enjoyed chapter 9 - how to recognize and defend against these attacks. Beyond Persuasion would also be suited to teenagers and young adults. Being more mindful of these dangers could give them the edge that they need to build strong personal and professional relationships.
