Between the Walls of Time by Michael Stafford blends political, scientific, and social theories with a few splashes of murder, arson, corruption, FBI surveillance, and Cherokee mysticism into a storyline relevant for today. The plot opens in 1970 when Cyrus, a young Army Ranger, returns from Viet Nam to his rural Illinois roots. He marries his high school/college sweetheart, has children, becomes a professor, and begins the development of a political philosophy he calls New Rationalism and an organization he calls The Front. He hopes The Front will become a force to reform the American two-party system if its principles - term limits, no outside funding, common sense, science, reason, and a desire to do what is best for the country - can attract enough Millenials and independents to offer moderate voters a third choice.
No matter your political persuasion or whether you’re Gen X, Y, Z, or even a Baby Boomer like me, Between the Walls of Time is both entertaining and thought-provoking. The narrative is descriptive and moves at a good pace. There is an interesting cast of characters that adds drama and a few twists and turns. The fiscally conservative but socially liberal Cyrus is the thread that weaves them all together. He is well-meaning, fully human, logic-driven, and motivational. Will The Front become a third party and succeed in challenging the “business as usual” practices of Democrats and Republicans? Or will those in power do everything they can to retain their power and the status quo? “Grace and kindness still exist among the American people,” Cyrus observes. “Perhaps this emotion will carry the day.”
