Benevolent by Erin A. Jensen is a spellbinding story that brought tears to my eyes as I followed the young protagonist. It is a story about a dying friend, an angel, and an unbreakable friendship. Abigail Perkins is a fifteen-year-old girl who has challenges relating to others in school. But she finds inspiration in her best friend, Danny Cobb, and in watching the television show, Supernatural. Her world comes crashing down when Danny’s mother calls to say he might not live through the night. Danny is a cancer patient, living through the last excruciating moments of his life. But Abigail isn’t allowed to visit him, so she can’t say goodbye to her best friend. This makes her terribly sad. But something extraordinary happens: the loveliest of the angels in Supernatural is there at the foot of her bed. It isn’t a dream. And what happens is a miracle that makes this story an endearing one.
Erin A. Jensen’s Benevolent is a stunning audiobook that kept me awake through the night, the kind of book that is as comforting as it is entertaining. It is told in the first-person narrative voice, following the point of view of the female protagonist. The voice of the angel is described as soothing and I loved how it sounded in the recording. Abigail is a typical teenager, with the pastimes that people her age are familiar with — getting glued to a show, for instance. She is well-written and reflects a world where young people would like to take flights. The story is sprinkled with well-written dialogues, the plot has a beautiful twist, and the characters win the sympathy of the readers. The audiobook is well-narrated and I enjoyed the female narrative voice. It is clear and exciting, at times soothing. The use of another voice helps readers know when the point of view changes. The audio is clear and professionally recorded. I enjoyed the experience of listening to the story, without straining in any way.
