Bee Conspiracy by David Boito is a fantastic environmental thriller. Detective “Duke” Wayne has been put on admin leave, doing desk work for the LAPD. Desperate, he’ll do whatever it takes to get back to Robbery-Homicide, so when he’s asked to produce a report on an accidental bee sting death, he jumps at the chance. He thinks it will be an easy ticket but he couldn’t be more wrong. His new partner, a US Fish and Wildlife Service Special Agent, is an expert on insects and thinks this was no accident – it was murder. Kelso Bagley takes Duke on a journey he will never forget through the world of robotized farming and beekeeping, and there they discover a huge conspiracy involving weaponized insects. Can they get to the truth in time?

Bee Conspiracy by David Boito is a unique kind of story, a combination of crime and environmental thriller. It’s a gripping tale filled with action and a little romance, and there are plenty of surprises along the way. It’s also a timely book, given the current decline in bees the world over, and although it is a little out there, what’s to say something like this couldn’t happen in the future? The characters develop throughout the story, evolving into real people that you can relate to. It is fast-paced, a real action thriller with plenty of guns, and makes for incredibly compelling reading. It is clear the author has done his research for this book and created a terrifying, thrilling crime mystery with an element of horror. If you love a good mystery story, this is the book for you.

Can bees be used as weapons? David Boito explores this theory in Bee Conspiracy. Detective Duke Wayne with the LAPD had no idea that he was going to step out of forced administrative leave and into a large conspiracy. He is partnered with Kelso Bagley, a special agent with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service who has a specialty in insects. Duke thought that the case of an accidental death from bee stings should be an open and shut case and he could earn his position back with the Robbery-Homicide squad. After Kelso’s investigation, it turns out that it was a homicide. Will Duke be able to navigate the world of beekeeping and protect his life and the lives of Los Angeles citizens?

David Boito has written a masterpiece of a thriller that helps raise awareness of the environment and highlights how nature helps us all live. Kelso Bagley mentions the butterfly effect, which is the concept of small changes, like the flap of a butterfly's wings, triggering the cause of larger consequences like a tornado. The plot focuses on the greater potential consequences of eliminating natural pollinators, bees, and butterflies, in our world. The action progressed at a good pace and my heart was racing with fear for Duke and Kelso as they faced off against the villain. I finished the book pondering how my small actions like recycling can help the world. I would recommend Bee Conspiracy to readers who enjoy suspense, conspiracy, and environmental social issues.
