Author Biography

Hello, I'm Carrie Hyatt. My mission is to create teachable moments that touch and bond those reading my books with those who actively listen.
Readers will find something deeper to discuss and something special to learn not just from my stories, but from listening to and interacting with one another.
I wrote Spider!, Snake!, and Bee!, from some of my own experiences dealing with fear and some of the debilitating effects it had on me.
There is a lot to learn and do in the Shout Fear Out series. Kids will shout and move about while interacting with the characters in each story. My hope is that through laughter, participation, and discussion during teachable moments, kids will experience their own awareness of how fear affects them, and learn to escape from its paralyzing power.

Carrie Hyatt understands that bees scare people. In her book, BEE!, she shares a bee’s life and how bees interact with people. The concept of beekeeping is presented on a child’s level. Beekeepers take care of bees so the bees can produce honey. Unfortunately, most people don’t think of the dangers that bees face every day. Because people are afraid of bees, they tend to swat at a bee in an attempt to kill it. As the bee in this story flies toward the meadow to find pollen, it passes through a zoo. This is a fun children’s book that encourages the young child to call out “bee” as they read the story.

Have you ever thought about how important bees are to life? If not, read this book and realize they perform two vital functions for life as we know it. First, they are pollinators. That means they stay busy going from flower to flower, moving the male pollen to the female part of the flower. Over 75% of the world’s plants depend on pollinators to reproduce. The second significant activity for bees is making honey. Honey not only tastes good, but it also has medicinal usages. Therefore, humans need to help bees continue to exist. This book helps children overcome their fear of bees. Reading this book with your children can help them see how vital bees are to life. In BEE!, Carrie Hyatt changes bees from ugly, mean insects to be feared into cute bees that are our friends.

Bee! by Carrie Hyatt is a children’s picture book about a dutiful bee by the name of Buzz and how he makes his way from home to the wilderness that provides the pollen he and his hive need to live on. Buzz navigates around the many living and other obstacles that block the path along his journey. The narration is simple and for the most part easy enough for young ones to understand, apart from one word that was new even to me. This shows the book could be extra educational to those who are not just young but young at heart.

Carrie Hyatt’s Bee! is a delightful story that shows children both young and older alike that encountering a bee doesn’t have to be a frightening experience, as it describes Buzz on his mission to find pollen and bring it back to his home. Even though he encounters people, he is not deterred from his mission and he is not out to hurt anyone. The illustrations by Tatiana Kamshilina are beautiful depictions of moments that have the potential to turn scary, but nothing happens, and nobody is stung or injured in any way. The colors are bright and catch the eye in a way that brings constant smiles to the reader. The book depicts the world of insects in a way that isn’t often shown, where they are seen as positive creatures simply on a mission. That’s important for all readers to understand and it will put them at ease.

BEE! by Carrie Hyatt is the story of Buzz, the bee which the beekeeper sends out to collect nectar. He decides to go to his favorite meadow. To get to this meadow, he must go through the park, and there is danger lurking everywhere because everyone is afraid of being stung by a bee. A child spots him and starts crying. Another sees him and starts swatting at him. When his friend gets stuck on a girl's bonnet, he flies away with his friend. Finally, a drummer spots him and looks fearful, but Buzz makes it to his favorite meadow. However, he must return to the beekeeper, and to do that he must go through the park again. Buzz is not worried, though, because he remembers to be swift, brave, and safe!

BEE! by Carrie Hyatt is a creative, colorful, and delightful storybook that conveys an important message to young children about how to stay safe. As an insect species, bees play an essential function in the environment as pollinators. Still, people are rightfully afraid of being stung by bees and thus kill bees in their vicinity. Therefore, flying through the park is a dangerous mission for Buzz, making BEE! a relevant and exceptional story. I feel this story is vital because parents are not always around to protect children, and children must learn the basics of protecting themselves, and Buzz provides a good example. BEE! is a great bedtime story with beautiful illustrations that will be an excellent talking point with little ones.

But Buzz remembers the words to be brave, swift, and safe and gracefully dodges the attack. He whispers those very words to his friend, who gets caught in the little girl's bonnet.
