In her memoir Becoming Whole: Journey to Authenticity, Katina Washington shares slices of her life, from a challenging upbringing in Indianapolis, marked by her father's alcoholism and an absence of emotional support, to her evolution into a resilient entrepreneur and advocate for community empowerment. Recounting stormy relationships, including instances of domestic violence and single motherhood, Washington makes her way through setbacks with unwavering determination, culminating in the establishment of SHE. Event Indy Co., a platform for Black business owners. Through hypnotherapy and self-reflection, she embraces triggers as lessons, fostering forgiveness and acceptance. Washington's entrepreneurial endeavors, from a shared business space to non-profit ventures, further prove her commitment to cooperative economics and community collaboration. In its entirety, Washington's memoir is a testament to a successful transformative journey and the power of self-discovery in shaping a fulfilling life.
Katina Washington is not someone I had heard of prior to reading Becoming Whole, but she might just be one of the newest role models that I'd want my young daughters, who are also women of color, to look to for inspiration. Washington's raw honesty in how she made her way to the successes she has found was not a straight, smooth path, and her sharing of it and simply walking through to the other end would be a book by itself. I love how Washington emphasizes the beauty of uniqueness and authenticity. By embracing her own distinctive personality traits and experiences, she creates a platform that celebrates individuality and diversity within her community. The inception of SHE. Event Indy Co. is an extraordinary enterprise that nurtures the authenticity and uniqueness she values, and just as Washington contributes to a vibrant and inclusive community in her 'real' life, she does exactly that in her book as well. Very highly recommended.
