Next time you hide under your bed during a thunderstorm, perhaps you should think of Beau’s mother’s wise words: “...that it’s all just a show/ And I should be applauding instead.” As children, we were all told different creative variations on what thunder is, as well as many other creative answers to questions grown-ups believe are too complex for young minds. It’s not unusual to be full of questions. Beau certainly is. Like why the rain is wet and why soda pop fizz tickles the nose. You don’t have to be a child to have a mind full of questions: adults do, too. It’s only natural to wonder why. What do you wonder about?

Brian Sullivan’s picture book story, Beau Wants to Know, is a charming story about a little boy with a mind full of questions. Told in rhyming verse and colorfully illustrated, this story will have young readers snuggling in for more questions to add to their already growing list. There are some humorous questions with their equally humorous answers and some ‘wonder why’ thoughts that Beau shares with the reader. Beau has a vivid imagination and when his mind gets too full of questions and ‘wonder why’ thoughts, he creatively fills in the blanks himself, like his ponderings on what type of pet would be best: lion, baboon, or giraffe. “A baboon is one of the smartest of apes./ Though Mom wouldn’t care for one climbing the drapes.” Constructive thought goes into Beau’s resolutions and he carries on to the next pondering or question. A clever, fun way to encourage young readers to ask questions and to try to reason some things out for themselves.
