I'm the author of two mystery series, the Cat Caliban series and the Gilda Liberty series, as well as the mysteries SMOKE and BAYOU CITY BURNING.
As a fan of classic film noir, I wondered what would happen to those hard-boiled P.I.s ten years down the road, when they had ex-wives and kids and orthodontists' bills to pay. Wondering about the father, in this case Harry Lark, also led me to create my first girl sleuth, a Nancy Drew fanatic named Desdemona (Dizzy) Lark. I also drew on my childhood growing up in Houston.

Bayou City Burning is the first book in the Harry and Dizzy Lark series by D. B. Borton. What would happen if Nancy Drew met Sherlock Holmes? Set in the 1960s, Harry Lark is a Private Investigator who isn’t afraid of working less than lawful jobs when required. When he is approached by a man who asks Harry to follow two men and report back as to where they went, Harry thought this was going to be an easy job. But then he finds out he isn’t the only one following them and things get interesting from there. On the other hand, his 12-year-old daughter Dizzy has started her own little investigation business out of their garage. Dizzy is approached by 7-year-old Sissy who offers her an expensive Barbie doll as a reward for finding her father. Dizzy and her friends take up the case and start their search. However, when the father-daughter duo compares their cases, they believe the cases are connected. Can Harry and Dizzy solve these cases in time before something else goes wrong?
Reading Bayou City Burning was a boatload of fun. I loved reading Harry's and Dizzy’s individual cases and how they dealt with them. Dizzy is a pocketful of sunshine and a suitcase full of sass. She brought so much laughter and substance to the story. While Harry is a great character with incredible comic timing, Dizzy just takes the cake for me. The element of mystery is so intense I could almost taste it. D. B. Borton adds characters to further the plot, throws something in the mix to make you take a step back and reel you in smoothly so that you don’t want to stop reading. I loved the story, I loved the humor and I loved Harry and Dizzy. Amazing, brilliant, fantastic, remarkable! I cannot wait for the next novel in the series.
