Many people avoid talking about touchy subjects to avoid controversy. Sometimes this can be an artificial barrier because if our thoughts are limited, our actions will be too. Barriers to Thought helps to analyze where the fear of speaking up originates, which may even involve anxiety from the past. Dale Netherton shows us how we can overcome obstacles with determination. Fear of making mistakes should not be a reason to avoid moving in a particular direction. We continue to act in the same manner when we have our old emotions guiding us. If we do not analyze our thinking, we will stay locked in the same cycles. Netherton examines typical problems and seeks to provide solutions. He motivates readers to be seekers of truth, showing us how questioning everything will allow us to discover it.

Barriers to Thought is a fine introduction to philosophical thought. Dale Netherton breaks down various points of view into straightforward sections. He shows us that one should not pretend to understand and teaches why thinking is not just answering questions in our minds. Netherton also evaluates how we learn and assimilate ideas. I found this interesting because the topic is seldom discussed. The author talks about action as a response to thought, explaining that many erroneous habits are simply self-deception. This book is perfect for stimulating an objectivity-focused judgment of one's thought process. The explanations are simple and based on practical examples. The lesson is to learn to think with the framework that philosophy provides.
