Do you know what a foal is? Or, for that matter, a weanling or a yearling? These names identify the stages of a young horse’s first year of life. Ellen F. Feld and John Cebula’s book, Baby Horse: A Foal's First Year, follows young Bella’s journey from her birth to her first birthday. Bella grows up fast; she’s up on her feet shortly after birth and running very soon after. But there’s more to Bella’s life than running. She also needs to see a veterinarian regularly, get shots, see the dentist, and have her hooves trimmed, to name but a few necessities. And, she has to learn how to lead. This baby horse outgrows her baby-ness very quickly.
Ellen F. Feld and John Cebula’s picture book, Baby Horse: A Foal’s First Year, is a stunning collection of photographs accompanied by simple text to introduce young readers to the amazing first year of a Morgan foal. This little gem of a book packs a lot of information and important horse-related words for young readers to learn as they enjoy studying the photographs. Youngsters will be fascinated by all that Bella does in her first year of life and they’ll want to compare Bella’s young life to their own and how some things are the same, like visiting the dentist, and others are quite different, like running around the pasture days after being born. Bella might be a bit wobbly when she first stands up, shortly after birth, but she’s full of energy and can run fast when she’s only a few days old. This book will be a favorite for young readers as they grow up and learn.
