In Babies On Board Part 1 by Susan Marie Chapman, we are introduced to a tiny mouse who had a wish box that he would pick from to decide what to do. One day the note said 'have a beach day with your family.' The little mouse was so excited and went to tell his family and friends what he wanted to do today. Grumpy the Iguana and Green Parrot were excited and happy to go along with the little mouse on this special wish day. Mr. Squirrel wasn’t too pleased as he didn’t care for the beach, but he joined them anyway. When they got to the beach, they discovered a blocked-off area that was a sea turtle nest. Green Parrot explained to the mouse that the babies would soon hatch and run into the ocean. The group met Giant Sea Turtle, who was checking in on his children to make sure they were safe and to lead them back home when they hatched. Grumpy, the little mouse, and Green Parrot promised Giant Sea Turtle that they would help.
I thought Babies On Board Part 1 was such an adorable and informative read for children. Little Mouse and his friends are well-liked characters that a young audience will find fun and relatable as each character has their own specific personality. The characters encounter a sea turtle nest and the father of the babies, which teaches kids about sea turtles, how they are born, and how important it is that they get to the water as soon as possible. It might not have mentioned how most sea turtles are endangered, but the book opens up a conversation about it. The illustrations by Natalia Loseva are also beautifully done and fit perfectly with the storyline. Overall, I think Susan Marie Chapman has done a fantastic job, and I can’t wait to read the other books in the series.
