Due to the media overload that we experience on a daily basis, getting and holding someone’s attention to a product or service has become increasingly difficult as well. Attention!: Get It, Keep It shows how our subconscious mind draws us toward something and then how that attention can be kept through specific applications that keep one’s interest. Erik van der Luijt explains how our minds are immediately drawn toward things that are unsafe or that are a threat to our safety and comfort. The initial shock only lasts for a brief moment and then safety must be introduced to keep our interest. Erik shows how contrasts between two extremes whether in color, words, sounds or even smells and tastes draw one’s attention and hold one’s interest where staying within the medium area, or gray area, creates boredom. Erik’s principles can be applied to nearly any endeavor including: advertising, literature, music, visual arts or even public speaking. Learning how to use the tools properly will make you a master at grabbing attention and keeping it.
Erik van der Luijt has assembled a very simple, yet profound set of tools for getting and holding attention in our media saturated world in Attention!: Get It, Keep It. He does an excellent job of doing exactly what the subject of his book entails. He gets your attention by doing something totally unexpected and out of symmetry and keeps it through providing solid information and application of the principles he expounds. It is very easy to visualize and relate to the tools and techniques that Erik is talking about because he uses limited and very concise wording rather than rambling on. Simple, profound, to the point and practical, Attention!: Get It, Keep It is an excellent guide to help anyone who has a product, service or work of art to which they are trying to draw attention. Get this! Use it!
