The planet Jupiter, a headstrong young woman, accompanied by her moon (servant) Callisto, journeys from their home at the urgent request of the council to find herself under pressure to stand for re-election - something she is determined not to do. But can she resist? The future of the galaxy and possibly the universe is at risk - can she possibly turn her back on her responsibilities?

Assembly of Planets is written in an abstract style, where a sentence may be left hanging, meaning obscured, while the actions and mannerisms of the large cast of characters are described in minute detail. Ms Brook has created a complex, multi-layered plot with myriad twists and turns, involving not only an assembly numbering hundreds, maybe thousands of planets and moons, but an entire universe; a universe in which occasionally I was left floundering, trying to work my way through a sometimes opaque storyline. The novellas that make up this volume of Assembly of Planets have created an interesting if somewhat challenging work of science fiction. One which I am sure will evolve into a worthwhile contribution to the genre.

The idea behind this book is entertaining and original. Reading about the Council members — Mother Earth, Mercury, Mars, Uranus, Neptune, Saturn, and Venus — all involved in a powerful drama was something exciting for me. There is color in the writing and it flows exquisitely. The reader is treated to a powerful set of images as they follow the characters in this drama of crime and investigation. It might be hard for many readers to connect with the characters because of the unfamiliar setting, but the emotions come across powerfully. This is the kind of fantasy that young readers will love, a story that will remind them of the world in the galaxy and of characters whose behaviors directly affect the world they live in. I enjoyed reading the stories, filled with drama and, at times, emotionally charged. Assembly of Planets: Complete First Set is a gorgeous and exciting collection, a delightful read.

This book is based on the idea that every planet, moon, and space construct that exists is, in fact, a person and that many of them sit on a council responsible for ruling. However, a recent string of murders has brought everything into question and a vote is called to reconstruct the ten seats of council. The selected candidates are put to the test with trials of fate and justice. Jupiter is known to be a self-denounced member of the original council, yet she finds herself made into a candidate against her will. Will Jupiter survive the trials ahead of her or will she perish in the attempt?

Assembly of Planets (Complete First Set) by L.W. Brook is a very unique book - this is the first time I have come across a book that made planets into actual characters. I was surprised at the personality of the different characters; for instance, Mother Earth seemed to be a controlling and petty character when I would have expected her to have a loving nature. I found myself quickly rooting for Jupiter as it was very easy to enjoy her as a character. She was a character that was pulled into something that she did not want, but once she was in it, she did her best. L.W. Brook really created a unique setting for this story. I was very impressed with the author’s ability to allow the characters to develop in a realistic manner over the course of the book.
