Can you imagine a time when squirrels didn’t gather nuts for the winter? They starved and many died. In Gregory S. Slomba’s collection of stories, As the Owl Flies, there is a story about a squirrel named Farley. He is sad that his Momma is long gone and many other squirrels are dying of starvation. He remembered a saying his Momma often repeated: “If wishes were nuts, squirrels wouldn’t starve.” That’s when he’s visited by a white owl who shares his wisdom and kindness in the hopes that Farley will learn an important lesson about survival and perhaps share it with the neighboring squirrels. It’s a profound message of Christian values, all about sharing, caring, and looking after one another. The other stories and poems share similarly important values on life and caring for others.
Gregory S. Slomba’s book, As the Owl Flies: Uplifting Stories and Poems, is a thought-provoking collection that will have readers coming back frequently to reread and evaluate the messages shared. The poems are told in gentle verse, simple yet reflective, full of metaphors and hidden messages. The stories are short and to the point. And through it all soars the white owl, the messenger of great gifts. Hope, optimism, sharing, caring, and thankfulness are the key themes throughout this wonderful collection. Heartwarming and full of reflection, this is a gem for the soul. From Farley the squirrel to a beaver who yearns to soar, and tossed into the mix a disappointing Christmas gift that becomes more than expected, this collection will restore the reader’s faith in human nature and life itself.
