In Andrew Learns About Chefs by Tiffany Obeng, Andrew is invited to a kids' cooking class, hosted by Amber. Chef Amber is very positive and already refers to the young participants as chefs, which Andrew finds odd. Andrew wants to know what a chef is and what they do—a question relevant to the topic. Chefs not only make tasty dishes but also play a crucial role in bringing people, experiences, and cultures across all traditions and generations together. The work of the chef is not as easy as people might think, as they have many responsibilities. What are some of the responsibilities of a chef? How do they decide what food to prepare? The skills and talents of a chef are also enormous. They vary from scientific to artistic skills, which help in the presentation of the dishes they prepare.

At times, kids face discrimination when they choose certain careers that some people do not feel are scientific enough. Andrew Learns About Chefs by Tiffany Obeng is wonderfully written, and I believe such literature is a step in the right direction toward encouraging kids to pursue any career they choose. I loved how diversity is covered, and this thought-provoking work got me thinking about how food can act as a bridge between many cultures, which in turn will lead to increased tolerance. It also got me thinking about how to handle kids to ensure the greatest impact is achieved when teaching them something. The young reader will also appreciate the wonderful illustrations, which make the book effective in passing on the intended message. I look forward to reading more by Tiffany Obeng.
