An Object of Desire by Jenny Twist starts with two girls, Hannah and Rea, on holiday in Tangiers. They are enjoying themselves until they notice two menacing characters following them. Everywhere the girls go, there they are. Despite feeling fear behind their backs all the time, they try to ignore it. When the mysterious Toby approaches them, they find out he happens to be after the stalkers. He instantly becomes protective of the girls and, when the girls tell him they are moving to Chefchouen, he insists on taking them himself. Nothing about the whole situation feels right. Who is Toby anyway? Are his intentions as pure as he wants them to believe? Why are those guys after them?
Jenny Twist plays with your mind in An Object of Desire. There is no one you can trust and nothing is what it seems. At least until proven otherwise. During the whole book, you live the same mistrust, suspicion, and fear through Hannah's eyes. Twist manages to keep you clueless until she wants you to know, slowly providing all the clues but without giving you the key to putting the pieces together. The characters are just right; simple yet well-written. An Object of Desire is a perfect choice if you want a light, fast-paced page-turner, especially if you don't have much time to read a long novel. It will have you gripped by it and you won't be able to put it down until you run out of pages.
