During the closing of the school for the summer holiday, the principal announces that when school resumes, a band will be formed. This not only makes Florenda and her classmates very happy but also gives them something to look forward to. Florenda shares the news with her mother, but unfortunately, she can't afford to buy a clarinet for Florenda. Determined to get the musical instrument, she makes a list of jobs she can do in the neighborhood to earn the money to buy a clarinet. Mr. and Mrs. Lyles are good neighbors, and sometimes Florenda is left with them when her mother is at work. When they learn of Florenda’s predicament, they decide to give her the clarinet that used to belong to Mrs. Lyles. How will the winter concert turn out in An Instrument for Florenda by Tomeko Brown?

An Instrument for Florenda by Tomeko Brown is wonderfully written. I loved the themes covered, such as the value of hard work, patience, and commitment to what we want to achieve, which will resonate with many readers. This thought-provoking work also got me thinking about the importance of having good neighbors. The plot flows seamlessly, leaving no room for confusion for the reader, and the easy-to-understand language used makes the work accessible to all kinds of audiences. The characters were well-developed, and the reader will also appreciate the illustrations in the book, which will capture their imaginations. This was a good read, and I look forward to reading something else by Tomeko Brown.
