An Inkling, a Backpack, and All the Time in the World: Traveling on a Whim is a true story of wanderlust written with a voice of excitement and blunt confessions. In a first-person POV, author Tamara K. Bryant begins her tale by facing the sad reality that she and her friends Casey and Valerie have to leave Thailand soon, a country she fell in love with and in which one she feels that she has yet to discover more. With her now or never attitude, she emails her boss to ask permission to extend her stay abroad and sets forth on a solo exploration. For over six months, she will be forging her own path in a foreign land. This is her taste of real freedom.
I was a bit worried about this traveler at the beginning, but as she established her determination and willingness to learn from the experience, it made me realize she would be fine. The surprising thing is that she possesses much high-octane spunk. She is a stranger in a strange land, and while she is trying to do what the Romans do, that spunk insulates her from anyone trying to take advantage of her. Tamara K. Bryant is quite a personality, as she embodies the kind of traveler who somehow manages to adjust to the culture shock after committing a number of faux pas. Hats off to the company she has chosen to hang out with for keeping her safe. Otherwise, a foreign place can be scary for someone to explore alone. As a writer, Bryant has a personable voice and you will be keen to hear about her next travel adventure. An Inkling, a Backpack, and All the Time in the World is a fun read, and it will allow you to get an idea of what is out there while you are waiting for travel restrictions to become more lenient.
