An Artist's Guide To Becoming More Creative: How To Build, Honor and Support A Creative Life is a nonfiction self-help book written by Pam Fingado. Fingado is an artist and creativity coach who has been exhibiting her own as well as other artists’ work for over thirty years. She’s also been an art teacher and an arts and creativity workshop facilitator. Creativity is something that can be approached in a conscious and material way. Fingado shows how you can “build a creative life,” and she illustrates how being in tune with one’s senses can give birth to ideas, no matter which form of creativity one pursues. She discusses goals and ambitions and shows how to use her SMART guidelines to reach one’s own goals. Each of the chapters concludes with a suggested creativity-enhancing ritual and a series of review questions. Fingado also includes an appendix of recommended readings.
Pam Fingado offers the somewhat off putting information that only about 10% of creatives are actually able to make a living from their art, but her book, An Artist's Guide To Becoming More Creative: How To Build, Honor and Support A Creative Life, gives the creative reader ample reasons why that fact should not limit their interest or participation in the creative act. Fingado offers her own solutions to the time quandaries faced by creatives with families and day jobs to accommodate into their schedules. I particularly enjoyed the chapter review questions which offer so much in the way of creative brainstorming. Each question is thought-provoking and helps reinforce the material covered in that chapter. I found myself going back to reread sections that I hadn’t fully comprehended as a result of working through the questions, and appreciated the added insights they give. An Artist's Guide To Becoming More Creative: How To Build, Honor and Support A Creative Life is most highly recommended for creatives, and anyone else who’s ever dreamed of having a creative life.
