An Abundance of Caution is a work of fiction in the science fiction, alien paranormal, and interpersonal drama sub-genres, and was penned by author Paul Anthony. Taking a detour from the clichéd route of alien invasions and action/adventure takeover novels, this introspective and well thought out tale envisions what would happen if a willing human volunteer were to peaceably help an alien race make contact with the planet at large. Our protagonist Tobias Sinclair wants this very dearly, but he is also plagued by guilt at the family he neglected in order to help change the world.
Author Paul Anthony has crafted a truly unique work in which I was surprised and delighted to find so much realism and believability. The overall tone is set by thoughtful science fiction which brings itself in line with science fact as much as it possibly can, but the true realism lies in the commitment to character narration and detail on display. We feel deeply for Tobias and understand his psyche totally, and because of this developmental work, we come to understand the extraterrestrials on a new level too. What results is a masterfully penned work with tension in its every move, a slow-burning plot that rewards with stacks of emotional investment and surprises later on, and a feeling of satisfaction, intrigue, and a deeper understanding by the close. Overall, I would certainly recommend An Abundance of Caution to science fiction fans who are seeking something well written, serious, and well thought out for their next read.
