Self-publishing or small press publishing, the secret to success, at least on Amazon, is the keywords. Authors all have one thing in common: they love to write, but they hate to market their work. In today’s world, marketing is the author’s job, just as much as the initial writing. So, why are these keywords so important? Quite simply, “Keywords are the bridge connecting a customer to a potential outcome or product.” As author Dale L. Roberts explains in his book, Amazon Keywords for Books: How to Use Keywords for Better Discovery on Amazon, it’s like a conversation. You mention a word that sparks another person’s interest and soon you are sharing all kinds of interesting stories. It’s the same with keywords: potential clients, aka readers, are likely to search using specific words to see what new books might interest them.
When potential readers are looking for a new book, they don’t want to read countless lengthy synopses. Keywords are much more useful in pulling in readers, who will then read your synopsis and, hopefully, your book as well. If you choose the right keywords, you’ll be successful in drawing a substantial reading audience. And that usually means more sales. Just what every author wants. So, you have to be creative while at the same time think like a business person. Dale L. Roberts’s book is a great guide to marketing success on Amazon by choosing and using the right keywords. He leads us through the process of identifying our reading audience, different types of keywords and so much more. Amazon Keywords for Books is the first of three books to help authors better market their books. This is an excellent resource for all authors.
