In Alzheimer’s Canyon: One Couple’s Reflections on Living with Dementia by Jane Dwinell and Sky Yardley, the authors reminisce about spending several wonderful years traveling to the places where they found the most happiness. While doing their best to lead fruitful lives, family matters such as ailing parents or medical problems put their plans on hold. Initially, Sky showed signs of forgetfulness that caused Jane to worry that there may be underlying health issues. Eventually, this led to a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Jane shares her thoughts, fears, and frustrations, and Sky tells about the ups and downs of his illness and how he goes about keeping himself from becoming a stranger to his family and friends.
In this book, Jane Dwinell and Sky Yardley share their life experiences from different perspectives, including Sky’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease. I enjoyed the stories about life on their boat as they traveled to see their family and live their lives to the fullest. I believe that it takes a very brave person to share the truth about how Alzheimer’s affects their life, as well as the lives of those that they hold dear. I recommend Alzheimer’s Canyon to anyone who faces this devastating illness or knows someone who does. The personal accounts in this book will help readers understand the daily challenges that come with the onset of dementia and those affected will know that they are not alone. I applaud the authors for sharing such valuable insights by opening up about their situation and showing how important it is to find fulfillment in the present rather than focusing on what the future might hold.
